This programme aimed at increasing the enrolment of children with disabilities in mainstream primary schools. The programme was rolled out following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture in 2009 to implement a three year pilot Inclusive Education Programme in 21 primary schools of Harare, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Midlands Provinces targeting to have at least 1000 children with disabilities enrolled in the targeted schools. The main activities under the programme were: Identification, assessment and enrolment of children with disabilities in schools; Adaptation of the school environment (i.e. building of ramps, toilet facilities, playgrounds, water sources & classrooms); Provision of mobility aids & other assistive devices; Teacher & parents training; Production of an Inclusive Education Teacher’s Manual for use in schools; Raising awareness & establishment of child to child and parent groups as well as Establishment of resource centers.
